Initiators and organisers of the competition are Use-it and NPO "de hondsjaren".
Use-it is an information and services centre for youths located in Ghent (Belgium) that materialised in July 2002. Use-it operates as some kind of "urban dissection kit" in that it tries to give answers to questions like "What else does Ghent have to offer besides the Gravensteen and The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb?", "Where can I rent a bike to check out the city?", "Do you have an overview of all the pubs/bars in Ghent?", "Where can I wolf down a delicious yet affordable meal?" Use-it chops the city and its surrounding area up in ready-to-eat chunks: cheap beds, exciting historical routes, specialised record stores, party hotspots, soft lawns for sunbathing, 276 pubs, unique comic bookstores, diggable museums, cheap supermarkets, etc. All this information is available for free and double-checked by a group of young volunteers who know their way around the city. Use-it works on a non-commercial and 99% voluntary basis. More info on www.use-it.be
Non-profit organisation "de hondsjaren" has been pulling some pretty outrageous cultural stuff since 1997: radio M.A.K.S. during the opening of the S.M.A.K. (modern art museum), poets and musicians performing on weekday trams, a film about the former Belgian colony in Guatemala, a cultural happening in the Ghent zoological gardens, etc. More info on www.hondsjaren.be
With the carillon competition Use-it and NPO "de hondsjaren" aim to revive this centuries-old instrument. To many city dwellers and visitors the carillon has turned into muzak; its tunes no longer play an integral part of their lives. Use-it and NPO "de hondsjaren" want to challenge everyone to storm the belfry and to program his/her tune into the carillon, so that this 14th century instrument can have an actual meaning again.
